Passports

Be sure that you have a valid passport for your study abroad semester! If you do not already have a passport, apply now. If your passport will expire during or within six months of the end of your study abroad program, renew now.

Make several photocopies of your passport (first two pages). Leave copies with your family at home and bring copies with you. Should your passport become lost or stolen, these copies will be helpful in securing a replacement. NOTE: Some countries require non-citizens to carry their passport or other documents on them at all times. Check with the Embassy or Consulate of the host country for more information. A photocopy may suffice in compliance with such a requirement.

U.S. Citizens: Any U.S. citizen leaving the United States needs to be in possession of a valid U.S. passport. The forms for applying for a passport can be obtained online at www.travel.state.gov or at your local post office, though one particular post office in your area may be designated for processing. It is recommended that you apply at least three months in advance of your departure, if not earlier. If you will travel within 14 days and have not yet applied for a passport or renewed your old passport, you must make an appointment to apply for a passport at a regional passport agency.

Sign your passport immediately after you receive it, otherwise it is not valid. Sign it in ink and then fill in the information page for emergency contacts. USE A PENCIL to fill this in, as the contact information should always be kept up to date.

Upon arrival in the foreign country, it is highly advisable to register with the US Embassy. Take your passport with you. Should your passport become lost or stolen, there will be evidence for a replacement on file and will assist in securing a new passport.

Non-U.S. Citizens: Any non-U.S. citizen leaving the United States needs to be in possession of a valid passport from his/her home country. Non-citizens must also check in with the International Services Office (ISO) at GW prior to leaving for a study abroad program outside the U.S. The ISO will advise international students on how to remain in legal visa status during their study abroad semester and how to re-enter the United States legally to complete their studies at GW.
