Academic Year Scholarship

Students studying abroad for an entire academic year in one location may apply for the $2000 Academic Year Scholarship. GW believes that studying abroad in one destination for an academic year enhances opportunities to gaining greater cultural understanding. If awarded the Academic Year Scholarship, your award will roll on to your GW student account during the second semester of your time abroad.

Eligibility

All applicants must meet the following criteria at the time of application:

  1. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  2. No history of judicial infractions or academic probation.
  3. Plans to study at one destination for an entire academic year.
  4. Submit the GW Study Abroad Forms, essay, and other required documentation by the deadline.

Deadline

  • Year abroad: May 1

How to Apply

Submit one essay (as described below) with an unofficial copy of your GW transcript to The Office for Study Abroad. GWeb transcripts are not accepted. Please include a cover sheet indicating your name, GWID, email address, the semesters you will study abroad, and your chosen programs. Scholarship applications will not be accepted without the required Study Abroad Forms for program verification purposes.

Essay

Submit a 500- to 750-word typed essay on one topic from the following options:

  1. How do you think you will spend your free time abroad, and how do you imagine you might get involved with the new city and people around you?
  2. It is often during our most challenging moments that we change and grow the most. Which challenge abroad do you anticipate being the most potentially transformative for you?
