New Horizons Scholarship
The New Horizons Scholarship provides $1000 awards to encourage semester study in areas of the world that have traditionally attracted fewer American students. Generally, these less traditional destinations are those found outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
Eligibility
All applicants must meet the following criteria at the time of application:
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
- No history of judicial infractions or academic probation
- Plans to attend programs in a country outside of Western Europe (including the UK & Ireland), Australia, or New Zealand.
- Submit the GW Study Abroad Forms, essay, and other required documentation by the deadlines.
Deadlines
- Fall semester or year abroad: May 1
- Spring semester: November 14
How to Apply
Submit one essay (as described below) with an unofficial copy of your GW transcript to The Office for Study Abroad. GWeb transcripts are not accepted. Please include a cover sheet indicating your name, GWID, email address, the semester(s) you will study abroad, and your chosen program(s). Scholarship applications will not be accepted without the required Study Abroad Forms for program verification purposes
Essay
Submit a 500- to 750-word typed essay on one topic from the following options:
- What factors (e.g. courses, personal study/travel, heritage seeking) have influenced your decision to study abroad in one of the above-listed countries?
- What do you think is the image of your own country/culture in your chosen study abroad destination and how do you plan to support or negate these perceptions?
