Security and Study Abroad Program Approval
Approval for study abroad programs rests on several factors, including an assessment of security measures in the local environment. The University has established a security protocol to guide the Office for Study Abroad in the review of University approval for study abroad in volatile destinations.
The protocol assesses information from the US Department of State, international security organizations, resident staff abroad, university colleagues in the US and abroad, international education associations, and other US colleges, universities, and program providers with students overseas.
The University's security protocol for study abroad approval may restrict students from participating in study abroad in particular destinations, even if these destinations have appeared on the University's List of Study Abroad Programs, or establish additional requirements for study abroad approval and the transfer of credit. It may also result in the suspension of an ongoing study abroad program's approval if the security situation compels withdrawal of GW students from the study abroad site. In such instances, the Office for Study Abroad will help facilitate the return and academic adjustment of GW students. Students should be aware, however, that they may not be able to enroll in courses at GW for the current semester depending upon the point in the semester at which they are required to leave the program abroad.
