Registering For Your Return

While you are abroad, you may wish to register for the semester you will return to campus. You may need to have a friend or relative take care of this matter in your absence if you are unable to access GWeb from abroad.

Before your departure, you should have:

  • Selected courses you wish to take during the semester of your return in consultation with your academic advisor.
  • Designated a proxy to register you, in case you are unable to access GWeb from abroad.
  • Provided the proxy with a list of courses (and alternatives) you wish to take upon your return.
  • Ensured all encumbrances, including your semesterly academic advising hold, were cleared at GW or you will be unable to register.

While you are abroad, you should:

  • Arrange for your proxy to send a Schedule of Classes to your international address if you are unable to access the GW Website.
  • Register either during the priority registration period (early November or early April), or wait until the general registration period (through December for spring courses, through July for fall courses).

Please note: Registration dates for the priority registration period are assigned to students based on the number of credit hours successfully completed. Students or their parents should check with the Registrar's office or the appropriate GW dean's office to verify how many course credits have been awarded. The number of credit hours in progress abroad is not calculated into the total number of hours successfully completed until they have been earned upon completion of the program.

If you are abroad for the academic year, you may find that their foreign institutions do not release transcripts after the first semester or term, but wait until the completion of the academic year. Academic credit cannot be transferred to the GW transcript until this abroad transcript has arrived. Therefore, students should not count the credits from this first semester abroad when calculating their date of registration. If students are closed out of courses necessary for graduation because of study abroad, they should contact their dean's office.

On the assigned date, you or your proxy can phone in your registration or register through GWeb. Your proxy will need to provide your GWID and pin number for you. You may need to discuss course options with your advisor via email if not done before you went abroad.

Helpful hint: The registration period extends throughout the summer, so if you will return for the fall semester, you can make schedule adjustments during the summer. The most important aspect of having a proxy register for you is to get your name into the system and to register you for those classes that may close before you have a chance to register for yourself.
