1. What is the Focus on Fall Abroad Living and Learning Community Program?
GW students who choose to participate in this program will have the advantage of being pre-selected to live in New Hall or City Hall and spend the Spring semester living with other GW students who have studied abroad. Students will also benefit from special study abroad programming, including workshops, presentations by local experts, and more.
2. What are the goals of the Focus on Fall Abroad Living and Learning Community Program?
By offering students the opportunity to live with other students returning from study abroad, the Focus on Fall Abroad Living and Learning Community will help participants maximize the personal and professional outcomes of their study abroad experiences. Participants will reflect on what they learned abroad; explore how to transfer this learning into practical, marketable skills on resumes and in job interviews; and discover how to continue to benefit from their experiences abroad in DC by mentoring outbound US and international students.
3. What are the community activities in the Spring?
Upon return from study abroad, participants will be recognized at a welcome back reception to give them an opportunity to meet and talk with other community members and share their experiences informally. Throughout the Spring semester, participants will also benefit from workshops designed to help them reflect on their study abroad experiences; learn more about practical opportunities to continue the cultural learning started abroad; meet with representatives from local NGOs, businesses, and government to discover how to initiate an international career; and highlight their academic and research achievements in an academic symposium.
4. I'm definitely going to be studying abroad one semester during the academic year. Why would I choose to participate in the Focus on Fall Abroad Living and Learning Community Program?
Students have the option to study abroad during the fall or spring by following the general study abroad procedures. These students will participate in the regular lottery housing procedures. Students who choose to participate in the Focus on Fall Abroad Living and Learning Community will be guaranteed housing through a special pre-lottery selection process. Participants in this program may pre-select rooms from New or City Hall.
5. Who should I contact if I have any questions about the Focus on Fall Abroad Living and Learning Community?
Danielle Quigg, Study Abroad Advisor, 812 20th St. NW, (202) 994-1649, dquigg@gwu.edu.
6. If I choose the Focus on Fall Abroad Living and Learning Community, do I have to live in New Hall or City Hall?
Participants are guaranteed housing in New Hall or City Hall so as to take advantage of all of the special programming activities that will be held in the hall throughout the Spring semester. If New Hall or City Hall is not your preference, students can still participate in the regular study abroad program in the fall and participate in the regular housing selection process.
7. Who will my roommates and hallmates be?
As you make your pre-lottery selection, your roommates and hallmates will be other students who participate in the Focus on Fall Study Abroad Program. You will have the opportunity to choose your roommates from among other program participants.
8. If I go abroad in the spring, do I get to participate in the special pre-lottery option available to students studying abroad in the fall semester ?
Due to the fact that there are a limited number of spaces, the pre-lottery option is guaranteed only to students participating in the Focus on Fall Study Abroad Living and Learning Community. However, a few students will be eligible for Spring housing pre-selection based on the number of students that choose to participate in the program in the Fall. Students who select to study abroad in the Spring will participate in the regular housing lottery and sign a one-semester license agreement.
9. If I don't participate in the program, do I have other housing options?
Students not participating in the program will still have the opportunity for campus housing in the regular housing lottery. To request campus housing for the Fall, students going abroad should participate in Housing Selection for the 2008-2009 academic year. To request a campus housing assignment for the Spring semester, students returning from abroad can complete the Campus Housing Interest Form on the GW Housing website
10. Who should I contact if I have any questions about my housing?
Feel free to contact GW Housing with any questions or concerns about your housing via email at gwhouse@gwu.edu or by telephone at 202-994-2552.
