GW Latin America: Santiago, Chile George Washington University Office for Study Abroad GW Latin America: Santiago, Chile

SANTIAGO, CHILE

Is this program for me?

This program offers full immersion in Chilean culture.  Students enroll at the Universidad de Chile, with the option of adding one or two courses at the Pontificia Universidad Católica, the two most prestigious institutions of higher education in Chile and among the highest rated in Latin America.

Students join Chilean classmates in courses taught by local faculty.  The program also offers an optional Spanish course designed specifically for GW students.

To fully integrate into classes at the Universidad de Chile and the Universidad Católica, students must have completed the equivalent of six semesters of Spanish language before the semester in Chile.
Students can choose courses in over 20 areas of study, including political science, international relations, history, literature, public affairs, and art.

Highlights

GW’s primary host institution, Universidad de Chile, offers 69 undergraduate programs and conducts more than half of the nation’s scientific and technological research.  GW’s second host institution, the Pontificia Universidad Católica, is known for its excellent programs in journalism, business administration and economics; some economics courses are taught in English, making them particularly accessible to exchange students.

Situated within easy reach of spectacular beaches and ski slopes and framed by the Andes mountains, Santiago is a bustling, cosmopolitan center with a busy downtown, a modern business district, an active arts and culture scene, and many restaurants and cafés.  At the same time, a few neighborhoods still have a residential feel, with beautiful tree-lined streets and old, ornate stone houses.

Chile is the only one of GW’s Latin America programs with a full-time on-site Resident Director, making it the program with the most student support.
Students for the fall semester can elect to attend a summer intensive Spanish language course in Costa Rica.
