3 credits - Fall and Spring Semesters
Equivalent to GW Spanish 3 and 4. Complete review of grammar. Emphasis on vocabulary acquisition, reading, and composition.

Spanish 6: Spanish Language and Culture
3 credits - Fall and Spring Semesters
Equivalent to GW Spanish 4 and 9. Focus is on history, geography, and Spanish culture with emphasis on conversation and composition.

Spanish 7: Spanish Language and Culture
3 credits - Fall and Spring Semesters
Equivalent to GW Spanish 9 and 10. Language study based on written and video documentation of contemporary society, institutions, everyday life, current events, oral presentation. Emphasis on oral presentation, stressing communicative skills.

Spanish 108: Advanced Spanish Grammar and Style
3 credits - Fall and Spring Semesters
Prerequisite: Spanish 10 or equivalent
Composition, drills, dictations. Translations into Spanish. Study of vocabulary and syntax, with emphasis on stylistic devices.

Spanish 109: Contemporary Spain and Latin America
3 credits - Fall and Spring Semesters
Prerequisite: Spanish 10 or equivalent
Emphasis on advanced oral work. Discussion of Hispanic culture and civilization, based on contemporary writings and video documents.

Spanish 30.60: Reading in Spanish Language
3 credits - Fall and Spring Semesters
Prerequisite: Spanish 10 or equivalent
Reading in poetry, prose and drama. Introduction of techniques of textual criticism. Focus on the relationship between reality and fiction and on the linguistic and stylist difficulties in textual analysis.

Spanish 53.60: Epic and Satire
3 credits - Fall Semester
Prerequisite: Spanish 30 or equivalent
Explores the development of genres and movement, including readings of complete texts of epics, essays, novels and drama against the backdrop of the social, political and cultural events that shaped the history of Spain through 17th century.

Spanish 54.60: Tragedy and Comedy
3 credits - Spring Semester
Prerequisite: Spanish 30 or equivalent
Explores the development of the philosophical, social and cultural trends reflected in the literature of Spain from the Enlightenment through the modern period. Texts include poetry, essays, fiction and drama.

Spanish 126.60: The Literature of Spain's First Century Without Empire
3 credits - Fall and/or Spring Semesters
Examines the study of the social, political and philosophical trends as reflected in the 20th century Spanish literature. Readings include selected works of prose, poetry and drama from the Generation of '98 through the post-Franco period.

Spanish 133.60: Teatro y Practicás Escénicas en España
3 credits - Fall and/or Spring Semester
Selected representative dramas are drawn from the Spanish Golden Age to Contemporary texts. Students will have the opportunity to attend stage representations of five texts previously read, analyzed, and discussed in class. Special attention will be given to the director's interpretation of the text through the analysis of the specific semiology of the play.

Spanish 134.60: Special Topics: Contemporary Spanish Cinema
3 credits - Fall and Spring Semesters
Prerequisite: Two years of college Spanish
A panoramic view of the last one hundred years in the History of Spain through two of the most important and representative films is the core study of this course. Silent movies, surrealism, neorrealism, franquism, the contemporary school (Almodovar), every artistic and social moment is contemplated. A historical presentation will introduce each film for posterior analysis and discussion.

Spanish art of the 17th-18th centuries in the Prado and Thyssen Museums.

Art History 122.60: Spanish Art from Goya to Picasso
3 credits - Spring Semester
Prerequisite: Two years of college Spanish
Spanish art of the 19th-20th centuries as seen in the museums of Madrid.

History 101.60: History of Spain
3 credits - Fall and Spring
Prerequisite: Two years of college Spanish
Provides students with an understanding of the definitive traits, processes and unique facts that make studying Spanish History worthwhile. It examines those unique characteristics that help explain Spain's particular identity.

History 136.60: Europe in the 20th Century
3 credits - Fall and/or Spring Semester
Prerequisite: HIST 40, European Civilization in its World Context, or equivalent Provides an overview of diplomatic, political, and cultural developments in Europe from the turn of the century to the present.

IAFF 155.60: Spain in the Modern World
3 credits - Fall and Spring Semesters
Prerequisite: Two years of college Spanish
Examines the social, political and economic situation of contemporary Spain. Lecture topics are divided into two main areas: 1) Spain in the Arena of International Relations and 2) The world of labor: unions, employers and Spanish economy.
