Carmela Hernández García was born in Madrid. She holds PhDs in Spanish Literature both from the Universidad Complutense in Spain and from New York University in the States. Having lived in Mexico, Panama, and the United States, she started and directed the William and Mary College and the Duke University programs in Madrid, positions which she held for many years before accepting the Academic Directorship of the GWU in Madrid Study Center, where she has later been Resident Director for the last ten years. Dr. Hernández is fluent in four languages and an expert in Spanish Golden Age Theater. Among many other publications, she has published a book funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and several manuals on teaching Spanish to English speakers.
