Deakin University
About Deakin University
Deakin University is a large public institution, mainly located in Melbourne, with about 29,000 students split between their two campuses. Deakin University was established in the 1970s as one of the new generation of Australian universities. Deakin combines a university's traditional focus on excellent teaching and research with a desire to seek new ways of developing and delivering courses. Deakin has won several awards for its teaching and learning excellence -- a testament to its excellent facilities, flexible study options and courses which are informed by industry professionals. In addition to the Melbourne campus at Burwood, Deakin University has campuses in Geelong and Warrnambool. GW students can enroll in any of Deakin's four campuses and can select from the wide range of coursework available.
Learning at Deakin
GW students can choose courses from the full undergraduate course offerings at Deakin. You'll be able to select courses from numerous departments, such as:
- Humanities and Sciences
- Business
- Communications and Media
- Engineering
- Environmental Studies
- Health and Community Services
- International Relations
- Visual, Performing and Creative Arts
Classes are typically a mix of lectures and tutorials, sometimes supplemented by practical classes or fieldwork. GW students usually register for 4 classes for a total of 16 credits. When selecting courses, it's important to make sure all of your classes are being offered at the same campus. For more information on Deakin's course offerings, visit their website.
Life at Deakin
Deakin has a relaxing 3-day Welcome Program to help study abroad students make the transition to Australian culture and university life. The program includes a trip along the Great Ocean Road; sights along this route include the world-famous Twelve Apostles, the Otways rainforest, and Bells Beach, the most famous surfing beach in Australia. Throughout the semester, you can stay involved by joining one of the many University clubs and sports teams. More information on Deakin student life can be found here.
Accommodations
As an exchange student, you have the option of applying for pre-arranged housing (organized by Deakin) at several off-campus dwellings in Geelong or Melbourne, or at any of our on-campus residences. Housing ranges from art deco-style houses to modern apartments and may include: single rooms, shared rooms, laundry facilities, shared kitchens, lounge areas, bed linen and towels, and more. When deciding which option to apply for, you should take into account the following:- cost (e.g. weekly rent)
- type of accommodation (shared room, single room)
